Hyde Park on Hudson

Balancing charm, comedy and the slightest frisson of the risqué, this is the story of a nervous, stuttering King George (he of King’s Speech fame) and Queen Elizabeth as they spend the weekend with President Roosevelt in an attempt to secure the support of the United States’ in the impending war. It’s all seen through the eyes of FDR’s poor cousin, and later mistress, Daisy, who discovers that FDR (an impish Murray) is not the good, noble man she thought. The highpoint is a fine central scene between the two leaders – the roguish, paternal FDR, and the anxious young British King – a late night encounter that will ultimately define the future of the ‘special relationship’.
