Nine Below Zero
Sat 18 Nov 8pm
£11 in advance/ £13 on the day/ £5 18s & under
Nine Below Zero emerged from the London scene of the late 1970's, though the band had more in common with the Chicago blues heroes of the 1950's than the punk scene. Front man Dennis Greaves' rasping vocals and stinging guitar work won the band a place in the hearts of fans, music critics, and fellow musicians alike.
The current line up is bristling with superb musicianship, with Dennis Greaves on vocals and guitar, harmonica player Mark Feltham, and the rock-solid rhythm section of Gerry McAvoy (bass, vocals) and Brendan O’Neill (drums). The band's new CD Hats Off sees the band retracing their roots, going back to the Chicago of the late 50's early 60's. With a melting pot of blues ranging from Muddy Waters to the Texas Cannonball Freddy King, the enjoyment that jumps from these tracks cannot be restrained.
Rust - Green Ginger Fri 24 Nov 7.30pm
£8 in advance/ £10 on the day/ £5 18s & underBy Vic Llewellyn & Chris Pirie
Directed by Flick Ferdinando"Green Ginger pushes puppetry to the limits, and then, disturbingly, a bit further." Terry Gilliam
Two pirate radio stations are anchored in the same coastal waters. One transmits from an ageing lightship; its rival broadcasts from a submarine lurking just beneath the oil-slicked surface. Something has to give. Or be taken. A fast-moving story of treachery and tar, piracy and passion, sex, death and vinyl. Green Ginger's trademarks of grotesque puppets, animated sets and shiploads of absurd humour are welded into a dark comic-book vision of low-life on high seas.
"Green Ginger will make you gasp with the scale of its theatrical imagination, its highly developed sense of the bizarre and the brilliance of its puppetry technique. This is so different from almost anything else you're ever likely to see in the theatre... a rare and wonderful thing." The Guardian
