Are you curious about Shakespeare? Would you like to learn more, share what you know and ‘Have-A-Go’ in an informal environment with a like-minded group? No experience or prior knowledge necessary!

The sessions are run by Artistic Directors, Sue Best and Phil Bowen, who have a lifetime’s experience of working with Shakespeare in a professional and participatory context.

The workshops offer an opportunity for all-comers to ‘Have-A-Go’ at Shakespeare in a fun and supportive environment and facilitate discussion around the themes of the plays in both a historical and current context.

Come along and learn the skills of this ancient art. Delia will show you how to create a beautiful mosaic piece focusing on the theme of the Wye River and nature.

There will be mosaic tiles, ceramics, glass and beads available but please bring along any cherished or chipped china, beads, jewellery, stones or shells that you wish to include in your design and learn how to create a new work of art. Bring a design if you wish or guidance is available on the day.

Willow Weaving Taster Session with Nic Luxton

Friday 10 July

Adult Workshop

Nic Luxton is a local willow weaver and Grower with over 20 years of experience in her craft.

This is an opportunity to spend some time with Nic, making a Tension tray. Using ancient techniques to create a lovely addition to your home.

We will discuss how willow has been present in our everyday lives forever, as we weave our way through the session.

You won't need any experience of willow weaving and all tools and materials will be supplied.

Needle Felting a Landscape in 2D (Adults)

Tuesday 14 July

Join us at the Wyeside to create your own beautiful needle felted artwork with local fine artist Sally Bowman.

Drawing inspiration from the River Wye, local landscape and nature.

Here you can experience "painting with wool" a mess free and therapeutic - approach to creating a piece that reflects your surroundings.

Needle Felting a Phone Case / Pouch (Child 10+)

Join us at the Wyeside to sew your own phone case/ pouch and decorate it with a nature based needle felted design of your own, with local fine art and craft practitioner Sally Bowman.

Mini Beast Pebbles - Kids Workshop (7 - 11yrs)

Our Wye river and banksides support the tiny but important 'mini beasts' as part of a bigger ecosystem. Dragonflies, mayflies, snails, beetles, bees and more.

Paint your own mini beast in our pebble painting workshop.

Workshop Practitioner: Emmeline Thrower - Emmeline is a multidisciplinary artist living near the river Wye. Working with nature finds and repurposing 'rubbish', she loves to celebrate the simple beauty of nature in her work.

Hand Embroidery with Lucy Newman (16+)

Wednesday 12 August

Adult Workshop

Join hand embroidery artist Lucy Newman for a creative workshop celebrating one of the River Wye’s most distinctive and colourful characters: the beautiful kingfisher.

Using crewel wool and traditional thread painting techniques, participants will be guided through creating their own hand embroidered kingfisher, exploring colour, texture and stitch along the way. The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those with some embroidery experience, and all materials will be provided.

Toilet Roll Birds - Kids Workshop (7 - 11yrs)

Many birds rely on the river Wye for habitat and food including kingfishers, dippers and grey wagtails.

Make your own 'Wye Bird' with toilet roll tubes, paint and glue in our fun workshop.

3D River Wye Pictures with Rachael Blakeway (5 - 11yrs)

Two sessions 20 & 25 August

10:30am - 12pm

Come and create a 3D style picture of the river Wye. A variety of natural and upcycled/recycled materials will be available to use and experiment with , including natural sands and stones, paper pulp and textured papers.

You will learn how to layer and collage different textures to give a 3d effect. You could add a bird, a fish , the bridge or wildflowers and grasses found by the Wye.

Children under 7 to be accompanied by an adult.

Exploring, sketching and painting the Wye

Three sessions 26 August, 2 & 9 September

10am - 12:30pm

Adult Workshop

Lucy Burden will lead a series of workshops for beginners or those wishing to try a new medium. Over the three workshops participants will walk the river near Builth, choose, photograph and sketch a scene, prepare and plan a painting and complete an acrylic painting on canvas.

Lucy has exhibited widely throughout Wales and has been touring her exhibition “Flow / Llif - The River Wye from Source to Sea” to venues along the course of the Wye including at the Wyeside Arts Centre, Hay Castle, The Pavilion Hereford and Chepstow Museum.
